MP3
MP3 is an acronym for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 and is a patented digital audio encoding format using lossy data compression. MP3 is the usual file extension for MPEG Audio Layer 3. Layer 3 is one of three encoding schemes (the other ones are Layer 1, Layer 2) for the compression of audio data. Layer 3 uses so called perceptual audio coding and psychoacoustic compression to remove all superfluous information (the redundant or irrelevant parts of a sound signal beyond the auditory resolution ability of most people)
